Where does the "sacred solfeggio" come from?
The story does not come from the Middle Ages. It comes from the 1970s-1990s, and more specifically from the work of Joseph Puleo, later revisited in a book co-written with Leonard Horowitz. Puleo claimed to have rediscovered a series of six frequencies by applying a numerological reduction method to a passage from the Book of Numbers in the Bible.
It's a modern construct. No medieval manuscript mentions these frequencies, and for a simple reason: the measurement of sound pitch in hertz did not exist at the time. The hertz is a 19th-century unit. The tuning fork itself was invented in 1711.
This does not make the frequency "false": 528 Hz is a perfectly real sound, like 440 Hz or 432 Hz. It is its origin story that is recent, not the sound.
What about DNA repair?
This claim, found in the titles of dozens of product descriptions, dates back to experiments conducted in the late 1980s by Glen Rein on DNA in test tubes exposed to different music. These studies are very limited, have not been reproduced, and did not involve a human being listening to a tuning fork in their living room.
To date, there is no solid clinical study establishing that a particular sound frequency has a specific effect on DNA, immunity, or a pathology. What does exist, however, is a body of work on music and relaxation in general — but these works do not designate any magical frequency and rather conclude that it is the listening itself, and the context, that matter.
Why everyone still repeats it
Because it sells. A €34 tuning fork is a beautiful object; a €34 tuning fork that repairs DNA is a boon. The problem is that this phrase is an unauthorized health claim, and French regulations treat it as a deceptive commercial practice — with a maximum of two years imprisonment and a €300,000 fine.
In other words: when a shop writes "DNA repair" on a product description, it is mainly telling you that it doesn't know the regulations of its own profession.
So why sell one?
Because what a tuning fork actually does is quite enough.
You strike it, and it produces a pure note — a wave very close to a sine wave, without the disordered harmonics of a voice or an engine. This note decays slowly, for thirty to forty seconds, then disappears.
During these forty seconds, something very simple happens: you listen. You don't decide when you stop; the sound decides. And attention that has a beginning and an end given by something other than your will is infinitely easier to sustain than attention you have to create yourself.
That's all. It's not a medical device; it's an object that measures a pause. And if you're looking to take ten minutes for yourself each day, an object that marks the beginning and end is better than a New Year's resolution.
432, 440, 528: which to choose?
440 Hz is the reference A for international tuning. 432 Hz and 528 Hz are alternative tunings supported by currents predating the internet but popularized by it. Musically, the difference is audible but small; symbolically, it matters to those who care.
If you are looking for an object to mark a pause, choose the one whose sound you like. If you are looking for a measurable effect on your health, none of the three will give it to you.
